IB Music Prescribed Works: analysing, comparing, and contrasting Bach and Kodaly
Please note that this is an online workshop.Registration for the IB Music Prescribed Works: analysing, comparing, and contrasting Bach and Kodaly workshop is open to both new and experienced teachers of Music in authorized or candidate schools. The time commitment required is around 4 – 6 hours per week and two modules are released in each week, giving the total workshop time of three weeks.
Module 1 – Introduction
This section will cover:
- Getting to know your peers
- Familiarising yourself with the workshop site
- Aims and objectives of the workshop
- Review of the Listening Paper
- Why the Prescribed Works?
Module 2 – Context: Composers and Compositions
This module will allow participants to gain contextual information indispensable to a good understanding of the prescribed works. Included in this module:
- The composers and their context
- The styles of these pieces
- The criticism
Module 3 – Analysis I: The compositions
With the contextual information acquired in the previous module, participants will develop a guided analysis of the pieces. This analysis will include areas such as harmony, melody, rhythm, orchestration, instrumentation, structure, form, etc. At the end of this module teachers will be able to describe, locate and explain the principal characteristics of these pieces.
Module 4 – Analysis II: Comparing and Contrasting
The analysis made in the previous module will allow participant to find similarities and differences between the two prescribed works. In this section, and through collective analysis and diverse activities, teachers will determine existing links between the pieces.
Module 5 – Teaching I: Introducing the works to the students
This module will provide teachers with practical ideas and exercises to explain and to develop understanding of the pieces among their students. Participants will also collaborate and exchange teaching ideas appropriate to their different school and class situations. At the end of this module teachers will acquire an adequate amount of tools to begin teaching the two IB prescribed works.
Module 6 – Teaching II: Preparing the students for the exam
In this section we will explore ideas to prepare students to answer questions about the IB prescribed works. Through the examination of high-level and low-level answers, participants will gain awareness of the IB standards and expectations for this section of the exam. In addition, in this module we will suggest exercises to develop critical thinking in relation to music, a key element to successfully answer the new question 3 of the test.
Triple A Learning also publishes BACCpacks for the Bach and Kodaly Prescribed works. The workshop does not include these BACCpacks which are designed for student use. However, the workshop will go through the analysis in the BACCpack and will have a range of discussion and other activities for teachers to support the analysis of the prescribed works.
